I joined a new training program yesterday.

DecideThis coach had an interesting business model I haven’t seen before. And even though I have a lot of balls in the air – I knew I’d never enroll if I waited for things to cool down.

Because it never does. And we kid ourselves into thinking we’ll think about it and get back around to it later. But don’t.

Well, I don’t, anyway.

What does “I want to think about it” mean?

Let me get out my Webster’s Ambivalent-English Dictionary.

The official definition is,

When you try to convince yourself that you’ll think about a decision but you end up putting out the next fire instead; then forget about it and keep doing the same sh*t with different packaging thinking you’re doing something different; and stay stuck in the same pattern you’ve been in since you started your business – even though you’re not even really aware that you keep repeating this pattern over and over and making yourself miserable.

What’s that look like in real life?

  • You join yet another accountability group with your smart, lovely friends who also have struggling businesses
  • You limit your professional development to free webinars, handouts and videos
  • Or you buy another self-study program, convincing yourself you’ll make time to do it, but don’t
  • You have several new exciting things underway all at once “because this time it’s gonna work” – and when they all flop you scratch your head wondering why things still aren’t working for you
  • You dither and don’t make decisions

In fact, in the 2 years I’ve been running Evolve Accelerator, I’ve had at least a dozen people tell me, “I’ll join the next one.” Or “I’ll enroll in the Fall when the kids are back in school.” Or “Catch me in March when I get this certification done.”

But they don’t join even though their problem hasn’t been solved or their self-sabotaging patterns broken. In fact they’re often in a worse position.

Decide which club you want to be in: Ditherers or Doers

I’m miserable when I dither. I can’t stand that feeling of being at a standstill and not creating fresh value for myself and my clients. And I’ve done my share of dithering over the years.

That’s why I joined that program yesterday before we were off the phone. It’s a few thousand dollars so we’re not talking peanuts. And there’s a chance the program could be full of crap.

But if I don’t continue expanding myself and finding new ways to do business, why would entrepreneurs hire me? They look to me for ideas and resources. And out of the box thinking. And my spin on how a mishmash of stuff could fit together to create something really unique and true to them. And that’s what they’ll continue to get from me.

I had to make a decision.

This time I chose Doer instead of Ditherer.

Sofia came to me in tears.

She thought she had things under control. And then her biggest client canceled their contract which created a cash flow crunch.

“Now what? How am I going to make ends meet?” she asked. “I’m going to have to get a JOB!” She thought she had things under control.

Long before I launched The Biztruth, I helped people find and start franchises.

And franchises don’t come cheap. 

You have a franchise fee. Training, technology, possibly a lease and many other expenses. Not to mention working capital. And all sorts of other things that require moola.

Even though you don’t own a franchise, you still have a lot of expenses and surprises that require some quick action when sales are down.

Olivia’s situation was a little different. 

She’d invested tens of thousands of dollars in program and coaches but still hadn’t gotten herself or her business off the ground. Credit card bills were piling up. But she wasn’t ready to give up on her dream of making her business fly so she needed fresh options.

It happened again.

During a Money Momentum session with a new client, I asked how her clients benefit from working with her.

And with all the love and respect I have for her, here’s what I heard…

And she’s no exception. I’m even guilty of it when I get really lazy. Or am in a hurry to bang something out.

Darlings, (I’m talking to myself too 🙂 you MUST be able to articulate the benefits your deliver so that your clients understand your amazing value!

And quite frankly, what you think it is, usually isn’t what it REALLY is.

Don’t make them do all the hard work and try to piece it together or they’ll never buy from you. Well, hardly ever. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut.

Oh, so young!

In my early 20s, my boss struck a deal for me to travel withAnthony Robbins’ team to all of his one-day events.

At first, I was in awe of his sheer size. Inspired by his message of personal power. Intrigued by the groupies.

I watched how Tony’s sales teams sold out his events in 3 different cities every six weeks. Created a frenzy. And did back of the room sales.

The guy clearly had the whole money making thing figured out.

In hindsight, what fascinates me most are the different paths Tony and my boss took after their days of working together selling Jim Rohn seminars in the 70s.

Tony wrote books, created info products and held seminars and retreats all over the world. My boss tried to build a business on one product with low margins without the sales volume to make it profitable.

Tony’s “power move” was to pound his chest. My boss’ “power move” was to rob Peter to pay Paul.

Tony earned millions. My boss was lucky to pay his mortgage two months in a row. Or pay me, for that matter.

When I work with clients today, I now realize how much I draw on what I learned from that experience.

There’s a huge divide between intentionally creating a business model that’s true to you, versus struggling and making things harder than they need to be.

And it’s something every entrepreneur gets to choose for himself. Or herself 🙂

I’ve done it both ways. And in hindsight, I can unequivocally tell you that getting intentional about what I wanted my business to do for ME and MY life has been the difference between my successes and failures.
