launched The Biztruth.
Those first few years were quite a shock after a relatively cushy and predictable 7 years of owning my franchise!
Yes, it’s been quite a ride.
And looking back, there were two things that initially stunted my business growth and personal happiness when I launched.
And I notice those same things with many of the women entrepreneurs I meet so I want to share them with you.
1. Women feel the need to ask others for permission.
From their spouse. Coaches. Peers. Friends. Mailman. Butcher…
I’ll never forget the time I asked my “millionaire mentor” what he thought about me creating a web tv show that would’ve gotten me a bunch of visibility early on. He flat out told me “no don’t do it.”
Ummmmmm… why in the world would I let HIM decide for ME?
Sigh… because I didn’t trust myself.
How do you expect your prospects and clients to trust you if you don’t even trust yourself?
That’s the question I had to ask myself because I had overwhelming evidence in the form of the next problem…
2. There’s not a single entrepreneur who’s not looking for more clients.
We spend all sorts of time and money on programs hoping for an instant and BIG payoff.
But when it doesn’t work, we lose trust in ourselves to make good decisions.
It’s a vicious circle.
Once I was able to pull my head out of my ass (Sorry, Dad. I know you’re reading this, but it’s true!) and look clearly at the real keys to strategically building my business, everything changed for the better.
If you want to learn more, I wrote a brief that explains what to do to get more clients and gain a fresh level of self-trust.It’s something different that’ll make you question what you’ve been told about how to get more clients.
It’ll challenge your assumptions.
And it’ll explain what to do about it.
Once you master the five things you’ll learn in this brief, you’ll stop asking others for permission.
Because your level of self-trust will be locked in.
You can download this free brief using the link below:
Knowing this stuff 6 years ago when I moved into this wild West of business sure would’ve been a time, money and heartache saver – so I hope you take a moment to read it.
And a lifetime living it.
Wishing you many happy and prosperous anniversaries in YOUR business!

Note from Carolyn: One of the things I constantly hear from entrepreneurs is that they want to be viewed as a thought leader. When I work with my clients, I start by asking them what they stand for. This post written by Cari Vollmer , one of my “Mighties”, gives multiple examples of knowing what these Oscar winners stand for. Enjoy! – Carolyn
I was up late last night watching every moment of the Oscars. My sofa review: Neil Patrick Harris was OK, Lady Gaga wowed me, as did Julie Andrews, and mostly I was swept away by how some Oscar winners and nominees used their platform to share with us What They Really Stand For.
Reese Witherspoon voiced her support of the #AskHerMore movement which encourages journalists to ask female celebrities more in depth questions vs. simply asking what designer they’re wearing. I couldn’t agree more. I love the fashion, but what I really love is the woman. Perhaps we should start a movement called #WeWantYouToAskThemMore!
J.K. Simmons urged us to CALL our parents. I must admit, that one hit me directly in the heart because I could do a much better job calling my dad. Thanks for the inspiration and the nudge, J.K! I heard ya!
Patricia Arquette used her Oscar win to use her voice in service of equal pay and equal rights for women. Go Patricia! Of course, Meryl Streep’s enthusiastic support of this allowed us to see where she really stands too!
Graham Moore’s acceptance speech for best adapted screenplay had me in tears as he encouraged all those that feel weird and different to stay weird and different because that is exactly what’s going to set you apart.
Of course, John Legend and Common’s performance of “Glory” was phenomenal, moving, and the message was clear.
It’s exciting, isn’t it? To see what these performers really stand for?
And that’s what we want from you too. Your business gives you a platform to share with us What You Stand For! How do you have our backs? How do you show up for us? What do you want us to see, know, understand?
When you communicate What You Stand For with us you give us something to grab hold of and you give yourself presence. You show us you are so much more and we love that!
This week make a list of all of the things you really stand for. Then, find ways to incorporate these “messages” into your marketing, blog posts, website copy, newsletter articles, and more.
If it’s not clear already one of the things I Stand For is Your Voice. It’s remarkable, you know. Don’t back away from really using it.

If you want to position yourself as a thought leader in order to stand out from the crowd, there are 3 non-negotiable steps to putting yourself on that path.
Watch the video below to build your reputation so that it becomes a matter of when, not IF people hire you.
Having played a hand in the launch of over 100 businesses – and guiding thousands more over the years – I’ve seen, heard and done just about everything you can imagine when it comes to entrepreneurs.
But there’s ONE THING I don’t often hear from entrepreneurs.
And it’s the ONE THING that holds you back.
It holds you back from spending more time with your family.
It holds you back from taking that vacation you’ve been dreaming about for the past 5 years.
It holds you back from buying that new car you so desperately wish for.
What is that ONE THING holding you back?
It’s that YOU DON’T TRUST YOURSELF enough.
You don’t trust yourself anymore because you made a few mistakes.
So you hand all of your business and decision making power over to the gurus who tell you what to do.
And even when their tactics don’t feel true to you, you don’t trust yourself enough to walk away. So nothing works like you’d hoped. No matter how hard you try.
And when the gurus and coaches make you believe that you should want a 7-figure business… you don’t even trust yourself enough to admit that making more than a few thousand dollars a month feels like a fantasy. Much less a million a year.
And you don’t trust that YOU have a way of doing things that’s true to YOU.
How do I know?
Because I was you. Hell, there are days I’m STILL you!
After walking away from a multiple 6-figure business to start a new one, I handed my power over to my guru coaches and lost all sense of self-trust.
Every. Last. Bit.
After coming to my senses, I scraped and clawed my way back to building another multiple 6-figure business.
And you can do the same.
WITHOUT the truckload of tears and time that it took me. Unless you’re a glutton for punishment.
You simply need to know the essential keys for making it happen.
And if this is sound all too familiar, I want to give you a free on-demand video training – with no strings attached – no opt-in – no barriers – just click and play.
None of the hoopla. Or shiny stuff that makes us salivate. Or the “latest and greatest” marketing trick.
That’s just a waste of money until you understand these five things I’ll share it all in this free on-demand video.
You’ve been offered plenty of “shortcuts” already so you’re probably having a hard time trusting that it’s even true. I get where you’re coming from. It’s hard to trust others when you don’t trust yourself.
Suspend disbelief for 75 minutes to watch this free on-demand video.
I’ll show you how to get your self-trust back (even though you don’t know it’s gone.)
I’m not messing around here. This is real, practical stuff that shows you what you need to trust yourself enough to do things YOUR way.
Watch this on-demand video now:
Whether it’s your first – or third time watching – I promise you’ll get something new out of it.
Mostly, the opportunity to start trusting yourself again.
Even though you don’t know that you don’t trust yourself. Because you won’t know it until you start trusting yourself again.
And when THAT happens, ooooh, watch out, World… that’s what I call doing Biz Happier, Not Harder.
Take the business True or False quiz.
This is one of my favorite games because there’s no middle ground. The answers are black and white.
Darling, if you answered True to any of these questions and don’t have a solid plan that feels true to you, get your sweet self some support!

Before I started my Guru Detox a few years back, I found myself sitting in California at yet another pitch fest with 250 of my fellow entrepreneurs.
I felt so lucky to have gotten a VIP ticket for only $147 for this 3-day event. What a steal!
In hindsight, I know that the stealing had already begun.
I had just moved to New York City a few weeks before. I was exhausted. And jet lagged.
And disappointed by a $13,000 letdown I had with the event host a few weeks earlier. (Remind me to tell you about that another time. Aye!)
I took a LOT of notes over those three days. There was a lot of good info, although a bit confusing because it was presented in a way that was hard to make sense of how it all fit together.
And I met some really cool people. A guy from the UK who knows a thing or two about evolutionary psychology. A woman who’s become a business celebrity since we met. And a colleague I was excited to finally meet in person.
After the offer was made for the host’s $25,000 MasterMind and the appropriate amount of time had passed to swoop up as many sales as possible (I’ll tell you about the Guru Event Formula someday too), there were a series of guest speakers who did 90-minute talks and made a pitch for a program they were offering.
I found myself
in a trance
in the back of the room
pulling out my
to buy a
that I have never used.
I may as well have burned the money.
And the story doesn’t end there.
I bought a $1000 program that weekend too.
Which I did implement about a year later. It brought in no additional revenue over previous launches. And demolished my relationship with my community in a matter of 4 weeks. More on that another time. Sigh.
You might have done the math and wonder why I didn’t name this “my $2,647-plus-travel-and-hotel mistake?”
Hell, we could call it my $17,500 mistake. My $500 mistake. My $10K mistake. Take your pick.
It’s because I knew the event would be carefully designed for me to buy stuff. And I had no business spending a dime on a DIY program that wouldn’t immediately generate sales for me. And I mean PRONTO because I had just moved to a city that doubled my cost of living!
What can you learn from my mistakes?
1. Know the game going in.
Most (not all) events are designed to sell you something. If you justify that the cheap-o event is a networking and learning opportunity, but you walk away without a new client or an actionable plan to make money in your business without having to spend more money, was it really worth your time?
I don’t need to tell you that it’s not okay to not make money in your business. Or do I?
2. Tune in to how you learn best.
That program sitting on my shelf might have saved me tens of thousands of dollars or rescued me from certain doom if I could only get myself to implement it. But. I. Hate. Self. Study. Programs. I don’t buy them anymore because I recognize I’m a people person and I want direct access to the coach or creator of the program. Give it to me live, baby!
3. Own your decisions.
Was it their fault I bought their stuff and bombed it? Hell no! Bravo that they can sell so effectively from the stage!
Was it my fault I bought their stuff? Abso-flipping-lutely.
Learning from other people’s mistakes is a LOT less expensive – so if I can open your eyes in a way that keeps you from screwing up royally like I have along the way – I can live with my mistakes.
If’ you have a limited budget and learn best in an interactive environment, check out the one-day, pitch-free true. event on November 7 in NYC. We’ll create an actionable plan for you to sell more of a program, package or service you currently (or want) to offer. Let’s rebuild that nest egg, Sister. Unsolicited comments from two fellow entrepreneurs on Monday sealed the deal for me.
Erin Huggins said, “I’ve been in business 15 years and I’ve never heard of some of this stuff you teach.”
Mia Redrick, The Mom Strategist® is another grizzled entrepreneur who summed it up in one word: “Substantive.”
They were referring to the videos that I create for you and other small business owners about how to design your business model, position yourself as a thought leader, create marketing strategy and how to sell.
I spend several hours each week developing content that’s relevant to service-oriented entrepreneurs. All in the spirit of making sense of business – so you can enjoy your life.
If you’ve missed out lately, I’m using this week to get you back in the saddle before I release more content for you.
You can find a few favorites on my YouTube channel:
And I’m going to be doing more and more video subscribe to my YouTube channel while you’re there. That way won’t miss the next couple of videos I’m creating specifically for service-based entrepreneurs about business model and sales strategy.
In the coming weeks, I’ll be talking about:
- Overcoming Sales Objections
- Business Model. The Biggest Mistake Small Business Owners Make.
And if you have ideas for topics you want me to cover, leave it in the Comments below and I’ll do my best to accommodate you!
It wasn’t hard.
Why can’t your business feel as fun and simple as that?
Why, even though you’re working your ass off and making investments in your growth, do you feel like you’re barely an inch closer to enjoying the results you’d hoped for by now?
Why are you working overtime instead of enjoying quality time?
Why does it feel so haaaaaaarrrrd some days?
Wouldn’t it be AMAZING if there was a way to do business that’s actually as much fun as you imagined it would be when you started your venture?
Wouldn’t it be WONDERFUL if you found a way to grow your business, your way instead of trying to fit into someone else’s little box?
Wouldn’t it be FANTASTIC if you made money doing what you love?
Well, there is a way to do…
The five essential keys to infuse fun, flow and profit into your service business
(so you can stop working so damn hard!)

It’s like going to Home Depot and an iParty [store] all at the same time!
This is how one of my clients described Evolve Accelerator earlier this week.
So in the spirit of fun, I’m going to celebrate today’s newsletter with 7 ways to make business more fun for you.
- Get in sync with your sleep. I don’t set an alarm. I get up when my body tells me it’s time to get moving. And I looooooove a short afternoon nap when my body calls for it! Ditch the sleep rules and figure out what works for you
- Connect with your inner guides. That groggy morning time is when I get my best inspiration because I haven’t gotten into my head yet. I make it a practice to let my “soul team” guide me. Resource: Soul Language
- Move. It’s incredibly important to your body and mind to get your heart pumping and stretch and build your muscles so you feel strong. Don’t worry, you don’t have to become the female version of Arnold Schwarzenegger. I run, bike, walk and/or do yoga 4-5 times per week and still don’t have a perfect body, but I feel damn good!
- Stand in your power. I see far too many entrepreneurs shy away versus acknowledge the value they deliver. Quit trying to please everyone. Be who you are. Give yourself credit for how remarkable you are. And own it!
- Align your business. Declare what you want your business to do for you and define what you enjoy doing that brings value to your clients. (I love creating, inspiring, activating, accelerating.) Then design your business model with the right packaging and pricing to support that. You’ll want to include #1-4 in your declaration, btw. Resource: Evolve Accelerator
- Prioritize. You’ll never get it all done. Decide what’s important (doing #5 helps with this) and let the non-essential stuff fall away. Don’t worry, you’re the only one who will know (or notice).
- Play! All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl. So, Ma’am, step away from your business. Play hooky. Take vacations. Hove those toenails polished. Get massages & facials. Yummy!
This list could be 17… or 107 things to bring more fun to your business, but I’ll stop here. They’re the ones that have made the BIGGEST difference to me over the years… especially in 2013.
You may have noticed that few of these have to do directly with business. Hmmmm…
And as I plan out 2014, you can trust there’ll be even more FUN in store!
P.S. I just celebrated my 11-year business anniversary. Here’s the post I wrote for my 10 year anniversary. Thought you might enjoy it: http://www.thebiztruth.com/2012/10/
